The story GS
I n 1955, Piaggio, building on the success of sales achieved during the year with the successful 125 series and in the presence also dell'agguerrita competition, he decides to strengthen the commitment with the birth of the first advertising slogans such as the famous "Vespa yourselves" and to make the big news on its range. The series production is in fact extended to three models: the 125 already known magazine with few modifice substantial, the new 150 cc sidecar with optional designed for the whole family to the most varied uses, and the great, legendary 150 GS
The 150 GS whose initials "Gran Sport" reveal its special character, is now a revolution; In fact, the wasp first considered as a means of transport for a peaceful easy mobility is discovered now also belong to another segment result of the experience acquired by Piaggio in previous sports competitions (see sporting).
Innovations (never before seen on a Vespa) that consecrated immediately a great success in this new model, dubbed by many as "Vespone" are many: sleek and more aerodynamic shield, handlebar cast with lighthouse, bonnets largest and elusive, battery along monosellone, larger wheels, 10-inch, the new 4-speed transmission and the new 150cc engine that push to a record speed of 100 km / h never reached so far by a wasp. Its real strength, however, is focused in its formidable acceleration.
It 'easy to understand so that the wasp 150 GS is the model that all sports vespisti waiting period and that, unconsciously dreamed, especially young people, could finally have a "scooter" can, especially on mixed, to fight also with larger displacement motorcycles, and that accelerating bent his head just in front of the fabulous Ferrari!
All those who at the time had the good fortune to own the 150 GS certainly remember the waves of adrenaline caused by burning and ... lonely departures at traffic lights.
The success of the Vespa 150 GS is also evidenced by the number of individual products and the time from 5 versions made with more or less substantial (see GS models). The fifth series still holds the record for sales.
With these results we can definitely say that this model GS is what manufacturer Vespa has carved out a role as a "myth" and today is considered by industry experts as the most beautiful scooter in the way.
In the early 60 'when the success of the GS is well established here that the Piaggio relaunched on the market new models wasp which although related to the classical conception of the supporting structure introduce the novelty of the body constructed by welding together the two half-shells (VSD).
This news is also adopted in 1962 by the new version GS 160 and makes the body more narrow and sleek and any medium is thus lightened.
The new GS 160 is built with a new two-stroke engine from 160cc but still fed with mixture at 6% and not therefore adopted the principle of the rotary valve already introduced in 1959 by Piaggio.
Innovation motoring however impotant that boldly breaks with tradition and even more powerful does however regret the characteristic whine of the previous GS in favor of a more streamlined and made suitable to the new motorway network. Recall that this engine with the appropriate changes is still in service fitted to the PX. Another new feature in the GS 160 is the 'introduction of the spare tire provided (first model wasp adottere to this system), housed in the boot left that takes the place of the trunk side.
